As a residents of the historic Seatack Neighborhood in Virginia Beach, Virginia, we are deeply concerned about the proposed battery storage facility by American Power Ventures on Beautiful Street. Our neighborhood holds significant cultural and historical value as one of the oldest African American communities in the country. It is our duty to protect this cherished community from potential environmental dangers.
Personal Story:
Growing up in Seatack, we have witnessed firsthand the strength and resilience of our community. We have fought against numerous challenges throughout history, but we have always come together to protect what is ours. Now, faced with the threat of a battery storage facility being placed right here in our neighborhood, it feels like another battle we must fight.
This proposed facility has raised serious concerns among residents due to its potential hazards for both families and our environment. Battery storage facilities can pose significant risks such as fires, explosions, toxic chemical leaks, and air pollution. These dangers could not only harm our health but also damage property values and disrupt the peaceful nature of our residential area.
We believe that placing such hazardous materials within close proximity to homes is unacceptable. Our neighborhood deserves better protection from potential disasters that could devastate lives and livelihoods.

1) According to a study conducted by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were an estimated 3,740 reported fires involving energy storage systems between 2010-2019.
